Celebrating National Awardees Mark Loquan, Beverley Ramsey-Moore, and Duvonne Stewart
In the vibrant
tapestry of Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural heritage, the steelpan stands as a
powerful symbol of resilience, creativity, and community spirit. In 2024, three
distinguished individuals—Mark Loquan, Beverley Ramsey-Moore,
and Duvonne Stewart—were celebrated for their monumental
contributions to the steelpan and the nation as a whole. Their remarkable
achievements do not only highlight the advancements in steelpan music but also
reflect their unwavering commitment to cultural development and innovation.
Mark Loquan: A Beacon of Innovation and Cultural
Commitment
Loquan was honoured with the Order
of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT), the nation’s highest award,
at a poignant ceremony held at the President's House, St. Ann's. This
recognition comes at a time when Loquan is bravely recovering from brain cancer
surgery, making his achievements even more inspiring. Throughout his illustrious
career, he has been a highly respected figure in the energy sector,
where he has contributed significantly to national service and sustainability
initiatives.
Loquan’s professional
journey includes pivotal roles at Yara and the National
Gas Company (NGC), where he was instrumental in promoting innovative
practices that have made strides in energy efficiency. His passion for the
steelpan, however, transcends his professional achievements. He is an
award-winning music composer, songwriter, and documentary filmmaker, renowned
for his contributions to the steelpan music industry.
His influence as a
composer is evident in popular arrangements such as Celebration Time and In
My House, which have resonated deeply within the steelpan community and
beyond. Loquan's creative spirit has been a catalyst for many young musicians,
encouraging them to explore the expressive potential of the steelpan. He has
received various accolades throughout his career, including multiple Hummingbird
Medals and recognition from the Trinidad and Tobago Music
Festival. ln 2006 he received the Bronze Hummingbird
Medal and in 2013 he received the Silver Hummingbird Medal, acknowledging
his outstanding contributions to music and the arts.
Loquan’s commitment
to cultural advocacy is demonstrated through his involvement
in documentaries and projects that elevate the steelpan’s profile, Duvone
Stewart: The Man Behind the Music, produced a three-part series
celebrating the life and achievements of fellow pannist Duvonne Stewart. This documentary
reflects Loquan's dedication to preserving the stories and legacies of Trinidad
and Tobago’s steelpan legends.
In his most recent
project he co-produced the insightful documentary Panyard Universe alongside
Maria Nunes and Vanessa Headley-Brewster. This documentary, which premiered at
MovieTowne and was attended by President Christine Kangaloo, explores the
journey of the trailblazing Siparia Deltones. It is part of the A
Better Tomorrow series, a collection of films that delve into the
world of steelpan. Previous projects include Duvone Stewart: The Man
Behind the Music and Women in Pan, showcasing the diverse
narratives that shape our musical landscape. "The goal for A Better
Tomorrow is to shine light on people’s journeys in the pan
world," says Loquan, underlining the importance of storytelling in
preserving our culture.
Beverley Ramsey-Moore: A Visionary Leader and
Advocate for Steelpan Culture
Ramsey-Moore has made history as a
transformative force in the steelpan community. As the first female president
of Pan Trinbago, her leadership has been a beacon of hope and
inspiration for many within the steelpan fraternity. This year, she received
national recognition for her exceptional service and commitment to promoting the
steelpan as a cultural icon of Trinidad and Tobago.
Ramsey-Moore’s
advocacy extends beyond her presidency; she has been instrumental in shaping
policies that enhance the growth and visibility of the steelpan.
Under her visionary
leadership, Pan Trinbago has celebrated a historic year in 2024, marking
the formal declaration of the steelpan as the National
Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. This monumental recognition not
only enshrines the steelpan as a symbol of national pride but also acknowledges
its role in shaping the country's identity. The declaration paves the way for
educational programs and national festivals, ensuring that the legacy of the
steelpan is preserved for future generations.
The organization has
achieved a groundbreaking milestone with the successful campaign for Global
Indication (GI) certification for the steelpan and its accessories.
This certification protects the cultural heritage of the steelpan, preventing
unauthorized production outside the country, and firmly establishes Trinidad
and Tobago as the birthplace of this innovative instrument.
In August 2024,
during the 57th Annual New York Carnival Parade, Ramsey-Moore was
honored with six prestigious awards for her outstanding leadership, cultural
advocacy, and unwavering service to the Trinidad and Tobago community. These
accolades, presented by distinguished representatives including New
York State Council Member Rita C. Joseph and Congress Member
Yvette D. Clarke, highlight her impact in cultural diplomacy and the
